9:15 AM Keynote Presentation: General Permitting for New Mines

Mr. Adrian Brown , President, International Mine Water Association (IMWA)

Water related issues have permeated all aspects of mine operations; from permitting through mine-closure. There has been a resurgence of enthusiasm for mining activities in the US of late. Many believe mine operations and environmental sustainability to be juxtaposed; however, when taken into account from the earliest stages, they can work hand-in-hand to provide greater efficiencies and improve overall operations, while complying with regulatory agencies and the needs of ‘neighbors’.

This high-level keynote presentation will focus on the challenges, regulatory frameworks, and strategies involved with permitting for new mining operations.
  • Implement effective operational and environmental initiatives
  • Comprehend the permitting framework for new mines
  • Understand the effect that water management has on permitting
  • Be a leader in long-term water management sustainability
Mr. Adrian Brown
President
International Mine Water Association (IMWA)

Learn from an industry lawyer regarding the current regulatory and legal environment and how to ensure flexibility to the environmental, climate, and regulatory atmospheres. This session will have a focus on Colorado and the Western US.

Attendees to this session will be better able to:
  • Implement effective operational and environmental initiatives
  • Comprehend the regulatory and legal  framework
  • Be a leader in long-term water management sustainability

11:30 AM Farmersburg Mine: Case Study in Stream Restoration

Mr. Eric Fry , Director of Regulatory Affairs, Peabody Energy

This session will examine the case of the Farmersburg Mine through the replacement of a large stream in the Midwestern US. This case study will investigate the techniques used to improve the return to a functional ecosystem, report the results of the local biology, and study the habitats to assess the success of the restoration project.

Attendees to this session will be better able to:
  • How mine operators can better utilize treatment technologies
  • Evaluate quality-control measures
  • Learn about restoration initiatives from a first-hand source

1:15 PM Mining Influenced Waters: Chemistry and Treatment

Prof. Tom Wildeman , Professor of the Department of Chemistry and Geoch, Colorado School of Mines

It’s not just acid mine drainage; there are at least four different types of mining influenced waters (MIW): acid rock drainage (ARD), mineral processing waters, marginal waters, and residual waters.  Each water has a different treatment objective.  For example, for ARD, the objective is to eliminate mineral acidity.  Chemical principles such as acid-base chemistry, oxidation and reduction, chemical kinetics, and complex ion chemistry all come to bear upon the water treatment methods that are used.  Examples of how these principles come into play will be given.

Attendees to this session will be better able to:
  • Understand the intricacies of mining influenced waters
  • Act responsibly as an environmental steward

2:00 PM Strategies and Technological Advancements in Mine Dewatering

Mr. Chris Cottingham , Sr. Hydrologist, Newmont USA

Ms. Peggy Young , Senior Hydrologist, Barrick Gold

This presentation will discuss advancements in technologies and solutions concerning Mine Dewatering. Predictions, integration and environmental impact; all focusing on ‘optimal mine operations.’

Attendees to this session will be better able to:
  • Learn how new technologies are being utilized
  • Hear about dewatering and depressurization methods
  • Discover how to acquire and better utilize data management systems

3:30 PM Case Studies: Mine Water Reuse

Mr. Hu Fleming , Global Director of the Water Business Unit, Hatch Water

Mr. Mark Mullett , Technical Lead for the Process Separations Group, Hatch Water

Ensuring a dependable water supply over the life of the mine is a challenge in and of itself. Understanding how to re-use mine water is one way to minimize environmental impact and ensure good stewardship of water resources. Two case studies will be given: Water Reuse in Mining & Process Water Reuse for an Antimony Extraction Facility.

Attendees to this session will be better able to:
  • Acquire and facilitate environmentally sound water supplies
  • Minimize potential environmental impacts
  • Address ‘neighbors’ concerns of water quantity and quality

4:15 PM Water Utilization during the Mining Process

Mr. Joe Harrington , VP of Technology & Strategic Development, Alexco Resources

Mr. Chris Scholl , Director of Environmental Affairs, Inmet Mining Corporation

As mines are capitally intensive undertakings, maximizing efficiencies and lowering costs through sustainable technologies is a key objective.

Attendees to this session will be better able to:
  • Understand the opportunity costs of water rights and usage
  • Learn about the risks and rewards of sustainability through increased water management
  • Comprehend integration of operation
